When Ms. Debi Butler of Indianapolis noticed problems with her fireplace system, she knew it was time to bring in a professional. Her damper wasn’t operating as it should, and her chimney cap had seen better days. These issues can cause more than just inconvenience because they can lead to inefficiency, water intrusion, and other costly repairs if left unresolved. Wanting to get to the bottom of it, she called Beck’s Chimney Sweep for help, and we quickly arranged for Kasey, one of our skilled technicians, to visit her home.

From the start, our goal was to not only address the immediate concerns but also to perform a full assessment to catch any other potential issues before they had a chance to escalate. Ms. Butler agreed that a thorough chimney sweep and inspection would be the best first step toward restoring her fireplace and chimney system.

Inspection Reveals the Full Picture

When Kasey arrived, he began with a chimney sweep to clear out soot and debris. This step is critical because a clean chimney allows for a more accurate inspection, and it also improves fireplace performance and reduces fire risk. Once the chimney was clear, Kasey moved on to the inspection phase.

What he found confirmed that Ms. Butler’s instincts had been right: there were several issues that required attention. In addition to the damper and chimney cap concerns, the mortar crown at the top of the chimney was showing signs of deterioration, a flue tile inside the chimney was broken, and there was an unused “dummy” liner taking up space inside the flue. These problems, while not unusual in older chimneys, could lead to water intrusion, structural damage, or poor draft if left unaddressed.

Kasey reviewed his findings with Ms. Butler, explaining each issue in detail and outlining the repairs that would restore the chimney’s functionality and protect it from further damage. She appreciated the clear explanation and approved the work, confident that she was making the right choice for her home.

Repairing & Restoring the Chimney

With Ms. Butler’s approval, Kasey got to work. The first step was addressing the flue itself. He carefully removed the broken flue tile and replaced it with a new clay tile, restoring the chimney’s lining and ensuring it could channel heat and gases properly. While working on the chimney, he also eliminated an old “dummy” liner that had been taking up space and serving no useful purpose. Once removed, he filled the gap with mortar, giving the structure strength and stability.

The next step was to move up to the top of the chimney to repair and resurface the mortar crown.

Years of weather exposure had left the crown worn and vulnerable to cracking, which would eventually allow water to seep in. By applying a fresh, durable surface, Kasey restored the crown’s ability to shed water and protect the masonry beneath it.

Finally, with the structure reinforced and the crown renewed, Kasey installed a brand-new chimney cover. This final touch sealed the system from above, keeping out rain, snow, debris, and animals while also providing an added measure of spark protection. Secured firmly in place, the cover ensured that Ms. Butler’s chimney was once again ready to stand strong against Indianapolis weather.

A Happy Customer & a Fully Functional Chimney

By the time the work was completed, Ms. Butler’s chimney was in much better shape than it had been in years. The damper issue had been addressed through the improved draft from the flue tile repair, the chimney cap was now secure and weather-resistant, and the crown was restored to protect against moisture. Every part of the system was functioning as it should, ready for many more seasons of safe and reliable use.
